Well, That Wraps It Up For 2024

This is the 725th and final KN@PPSTER post of 2024. I hope this year has been good for you, and that 2025 will be even better!

My post goal for this year was 650, and I'm pretty sure 725 is greater than 650, so there's that. And 725 is the most posts for any year since I started this thing up 20 years ago.

My post goal for next year is also 650.

Why isn't it going up?  Well, once again I considered taking it down a notch or three.

I might get tired of doing the daily Wordle hint (that's 365 posts a year right there, minus the day or two a year when I miss because I'm traveling or whatever).

I might decide not to do weekly NFL picks next year -- two posts a week for an 18-week season, plus post-season posts and little side notes is another 50 or so.

That's more than 400 posts that I might not do, and that would have to be replaced with something if I stopped, to keep the current pace. And unlike this year, next year won't be a presidential or even congressional election year, taking a little bit of wind out of the ol' political blogging sails.

So even 650 is more "aspirational" than "sure thing."

Let me know in comments what kind of content you'd like to see here in 2025. And have a Happy New Year!

NFL Week 17 Results

My Week 17 picks, green for correct ones, red for incorrect ones:

  • Kansas City Chiefs beat Pittsburgh Steelers
  • Baltimore Ravens beat Houston Texans
  • Seattle Seahawks beat Chicago Bears
  • Los Angeles Chargers beat New England Patriots
  • Denver Broncos beat Cincinnati Bengals*
  • Los Angeles Rams beat Arizona Cardinals
  • Indianapolis Colts beat New York Giants
  • New York Jets beat Buffalo Bills*
  • New Orleans Saints beat Las Vegas Raiders
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat Carolina Panthers
  • Jacksonville Jaguars beat Tennessee Titans
  • Dallas Cowboys beat Philadelphia Eagles*
  • Miami Dolphins beat Cleveland Browns
  • Minnesota Vikings beat Green Bay Packers
  • Washington Commanders beat Atlanta Falcons
  • Detroit Lions beat San Francisco  49ers
Eleven right, five wrong -- same as last week. For the season, I am at 171 right, 85 wrong, and  in the 87.8th percentile among players of in ESPN's "Pigskin Pick'em" game.

Now that the Chiefs have clinched AFC top seed -- which means they get a first-round bye and home field advantage in the playoffs -- the final week of the season is pretty much anti-climax for me. I'll make my picks for Week 18, of course, but now my head is entirely into the post-season and the Chiefs' hopes for a Super Bowl "threepeat."

In Defense of Chris Collinsworth

Per Express US, football fans are allegedly upset that "any time a quarterback performs well, Collinsworth inevitably brings up [Kansas City Chiefs quarterback] Mahomes."

Is that true? I don't listen to NFL color commentary closely enough to have an opinion.

In this case, the quarterback in question is Jayden Daniels of the Washington Redsk ... er, Commanders, and I think there's a fair case to be made that Daniels specifically is someone to compare to Mahomes. On ability, yes. On style -- passing while running, running the ball, etc. -- yes, too. But mostly on this:

Daniels is part of the first class of quarterbacks to come into the NFL in "the Mahomes era."

He entered college in 2019, right before the Chiefs, with Mahomes at QB, made their first Super Bowl appearance in 50 years.

He was drafted earlier this year, the year the Chiefs recorded their fourth appearance, and third  win, of the last five Super Bowls.

Mahomes is simply the guy you're going to compare great young quarterbacks to.

He's also the guy that most great young quarterbacks working their way through the college football system and into the NFL probably want to be like and are carefully studying.

Over the last few years, Mahomes has started changing the way those younger quarterbacks play football (and Andy Reid has similarly influenced an entire generation of coaches/coordinators).

Prior to Mahomes, the guy younger quarterbacks admired and emulated was Tom Brady, and I suspect you heard a lot of game commentators making that comparison back then.

But right now Mahomes is the guy at the quarterback position. So when a commentator sees a young quarterback playing well, and in a style that Mahomes has put his trademark on, he's going to name-check Mahomes ... often.

These guys have a job, and that job is to fill the time between plays with words. Some of those words can be only semi-relevant ("beautiful day here in Buffalo, only 23 inches of snow in the last 24 hours and it's a toasty 29 degrees!"). Others can be only historically relevant ("that play reminds me of the 1993 AFC championship game when ...").

But some of them are going to have to be relevant to this season and recent seasons. And guess which team, and which quarterback, are 15-1 for this season so far, with four Super Bowl appearances and three Super Bowl victories in the last five years? That team and that quarterback are the current standard of measurement against which all the other teams and all the other quarterbacks can expect to be constantly measured. Chris Collinsworth noticing that Jayden Daniels measured up to that standard last night isn't a bad thing.

My Christmas Present To Myself This Year ...

... was catching A Complete Unknown at the theater this afternoon.

Tamara had other things to do today that didn't really involve me, and didn't feel like she needed to see it 1) on the big screen or 2) as soon as it came out, so I hopped on the motorcycle and whizzed over to one of the three Regal Cinemas in Gainesville.

It's the oldest and least modern of the three, but I always notice that the staff there are particularly friendly and helpful to e.g. old guys who have trouble finding the tickets on their damn phones.

This isn't the kind of movie that needs one of my "fairly short and hopefully spoiler-free" reviews. If you're both an adult and haven't heard of Bob Dylan and picked up at least a fuzzy notion of the trajectory of his career, you've got zero reason to go see the film. You're either into his music, etc. or you aren't. If you are, nothing I could say would stop you from seeing it; if you aren't, nothing I could say would make you feel like you needed to see it.

So I'll just say I liked it, and riff a little on how impressive I found the acting.

To me, one mark of a good actor is his or her ability, in a film about a well-known, non-fictional person, to make you feel like you're watching that well-known. non-fictional person rather than just an actor pretending to be that well-known, non-fictional person.

For me it's easier to mentally agree that Robert Downey Jr. is Tony Stark / Iron Man or Ben Stiller is Derek Zoolander than that, say, Tommy Lee Jones is Douglas MacArthur or RenĂ©e Zellweger is Judy Garland (I picked two really good actors who IMO did good jobs for that comparison).

Timothée Chalamet (Bob Dylan), Edward Norton (Pete Seeger), Monica Barbaro (Joan Baez), and Boyd Holbrook (Johnny Cash) all nailed that difficult task.

I'm sure others in the film did, too, but those four in particular are "characters" I've known about and followed the work of to at least some degree for pretty much as long as I've been interested in music, which is pretty much since I remember anything at all (my first well-retained memory is of my third birthday -- I received a drum, and remember knowing, on that day, that my dad played guitar).

I consider myself a long-time fan of three of those four "characters," and at least an admirer of, if not quite a fan of, the fourth (that would be Baez -- I've always wanted to be a fan of her music, but it's always felt just a little too formal for me to quite get there with it).

Being asked to "play" any of the four, especially Dylan, had to be intimidating as hell ... and they all pulled it off.

Honorable mention to Scoot McNairy, who played Woody Guthrie. I don't know whether he pulled it off or not because I've never e.g. seen footage of Woody in the hospital dying of Huntington's chorea. I think he did a great job, but he wasn't playing the Woody I'm familiar with.

So there you have it -- my non-review of A Complete Unknown.

NFL Week 17 Picks

The penultimate week of the 2024 NFL regular season starts early with a Christmas Day double-header (Chiefs v. Steelers and Ravens v. Texans) on Netflix. Which worries me. Netflix had a bunch of problems live-streaming a boxing match last month due to so many people trying to watch. This is two NFL games, with a Beyonce concert in between, so I'm expecting reception to be rough and will be checking my local broadcast listings to see if I can get the Chiefs game that way.

Here are my picks, as entered in ESPN's "Pigskin Pick'em" game. "Upset" picks -- that is, picks where I'm in the minority as to who will win -- have asterisks next to them. Any changes to my initial picks will be made before kickoff and will be noted below.

  • Kansas City Chiefs beat Pittsburgh Steelers
  • Baltimore Ravens beat Houston Texans
  • Seattle Seahawks beat Chicago Bears
  • Los Angeles Chargers beat New England Patriots
  • Denver Broncos beat Cincinnati Bengals*
  • Los Angeles Rams beat Arizona Cardinals
  • Indianapolis Colts beat New York Giants
  • New York Jets beat Buffalo Bills*
  • New Orleans Saints beat Las Vegas Raiders
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat Carolina Panthers
  • Jacksonville Jaguars beat Tennessee Titans
  • Dallas Cowboys beat Philadelphia Eagles*
  • Miami Dolphins beat Cleveland Browns
  • Minnesota Vikings beat Green Bay Packers
  • Washington Commanders beat Atlanta Falcons
  • Detroit Lions beat San Francisco  49ers
Every part of the season presents its own difficulties with predicting wins/losses, but these last two weeks are a real mess.

Who's injured and won't be playing?

Who's injured but will be playing because one or both of these two games will make the difference between getting or not getting into the playoffs, grabbing top seed or not, etc.?

Will a team that has its playoff prospects completely settled -- e.g. they know they'll not make the playoffs, or they know they'll be a wild card, have top seed nailed or out of reach, etc. -- hold out some of its better players so as to avoid injuries that might still be problems next season?

Will one of the teams in the cellar try out new players or strategies that suddenly turn things around for them and get them an early start on doing better next season?

If I'm not mistaken, ESPN's Pick'Em Game goes to a "bracket" system with the regular season end. At the moment, I expect the Super Bowl to be a Chiefs-Lions match, but there's a lot of football left to play so I could be very wrong.

I Enjoyed Going To A Movie, But Not Because I Enjoyed The Movie

One of my (adult) children is into Sonic the Hedgehog. Like really into Sonic the Hedgehog. So last night I accompanied him, his sibling, his sibling's boyfriend, and Tamara to see Sonic the Hedgehog 3. A good time was had by all.

But not because the movie was good. Other than a few fun references and a "breaking the fourth wall" bit by Jim Carrey, I found little to like about it. Less, even, than I found to like about the first two movies.

Maybe it's just because I'm old.

Maybe it's because I don't find the world/mythos aspect very interesting (I usually don't, when it comes to adaptations from video games).

It felt like a super-majority of people watching it in the same theater, and at the same time, as me (including my group) were pretty into it, so I'm willing to believe it was just me, not the movie, that was the non-working part of the me/movie pairing.

I'm fine with sitting in a big dark room full of strangers with my family and munching popcorn for a couple of hours. I happen to like Jim Carrey, and it was kinda cool to see an animated character voiced by Keanu Reeves riding a motorcycle (Keanu's into motorcycles in a big way). So I didn't have a bad time by any means. I just wouldn't be the person I'd send someone to for a positive review of the movie as a movie.

I rode MY motorcycle to and from the theater to save room in the family car, getting in half an hour or 45 minutes of the after-dark riding I need more practice at, which was also fun.

Quick Note For The Linux-Curious / Linux Hesitant

There's a nice piece at ZDNet today on "The 4 easiest ways to test Linux on your old PC before Windows 10 support runs out."

When I encourage Windoze-using friends to migrate to Linux -- and any friend of mine will tell you I'm always encouraging my Windoze-using friends to migrate to Linux -- I usually emphasize how easy the installation process is (easier than any version of Windoze since after, say, 98), how there are so many flavors out there that it's easy to find a comfortable one if you like Windoze or Mac user interfaces, and how Linux is at least as good as (often better than) than Windoze for everything except specialized/proprietary software only available for Windoze.

One thing I usually forget to mention is the "live instance" option that tops the ZDNet list.

It's simple: You download an ISO of the Linux distribution you're interested in, burn it to a thumb drive, then boot your computer from the thumb drive. Voila, you're running Linux.  You're running a little slower than if it was installed on your hard drive, and configuration settings and such don't get saved for future boots, but it's great for figuring out whether you'd like to take the next step and install it, either wiping out your old Windoze distribution or making the machine "dual boot" between Windoze and Linux. If you decide against, you just reboot the machine without the thumb drive and you're back to Windoze.

Another way of fiddling with Linux to figure out whether you'll like it or not is one I hadn't noticed before the ZDNet article: DistroSea. It lets you run various versions of Linux right in your web browser, with no impact on whatever OS you're running on your computer. At least some of these distros seem to go to command line rather than GUI, and while running an instance of my own OS (Linux Mint with xfce desktop) Firefox (yes, Firefox, inside an online instance of Linux, inside Microsoft Edge inside my own desktop machine's instance of Linux) didn't seem to be able to actually browse, but it will give you an idea of what the OS looks like and how it acts.

I don't really recommend the other two options in the ZDNet article -- virtual machines (because I generally don't like them) and installing on an older spare computer to try out (because if I'm installing on any computer I plan for it to be for keeps, and why temporarily ruin an old machine when you can just use a live instance on your current machine and know whether you like it or not?).

Go "live instance" to try out Linux. If you like it, install it -- and if you're not really, really, really sure about it (or maybe have some PC games or proprietary CAD software or whatever that you want to keep), just tell the installer to keep Windoze, install Linux beside it, and ask you which one you want whenever you reboot your computer.

For most applications, I expect you'll find Linux at least as functional and easy to use as Windoze, maybe better. And when it comes to the recent Windoze phenomenon of spending six hours installing updates every time you enter or exit, it's vastly superior (Linux installs updates when YOU TELL IT TO, not when it decides to).

Perhaps The Best Line I've Ever Read In A Movie Review

Will Leitch in the Washington Post:

There is nothing normal about Bob Dylan; how could you possibly make a normal movie about him? He is so unknowable that he has been mistaken for a vagrant by four generations in a row now.

I've been trying to decide whether to go watch A Complete Unknown on the big screen, or wait for it to stream.

I'm among those who felt some trepidation when I found about that movie, and that it would star, as Leitch puts it, "TimothĂ©e Chalamet, the elfish man in all those perfume ads in the corner of your browser windows." I've frankly found Chalamet the least impressive major cast member in the Denis Villeneuve Dune movies, and those perfume commercials do kinda weird me out.

But on the basis of trailers, and him doing his own singing, I'm expecting to like it. It will probably have to wait for streaming, just because there's a family outing tomorrow night for a film I don't care much about, but, you know, family outing.

OK, So Here's A Trump Policy Proposal I Support Wholeheartedly!

Per CNN:

President-elect Donald Trump said Friday the Republican Party would try to eliminate Daylight Saving Time, calling it "inconvenient" and "costly."

He seems to be unclear on whether he actually wants to eliminate DST or make it the year-long standard. I personally prefer the latter, but I'd be fine with either. Changing the clocks twice a year is annoying, it serves no real purpose, and it kills people.

Hopefully he'll be able to get a bill on his desk doing away with government recognition of the practice.

Yes, More Motorcycle Thoughts

I ran out yesterday to 1) get the bike's 1,000-mile maintenance done, and 2) have lunch with reader GregL. Great time all around, and two aspects worth recounting on the motorcycle end. In reverse order:

While waiting outside Sam's Club before that lunch, I got into a discussion with a young lady who's a mechanic, who probably weighs 100 pounds soaking wet, and who currently rides, IIRC, a 750cc Kawasaki.  We discussed good bikes and she highly recommended her previous bike, a model I've never heard a bad thing about from an owner/rider: The Honda Shadow. So I'm going to put that on my list of possible future bikes.

I talked with the guy at the scooter shop about improvements to the Italica Bulldog 150, and at the labor rates he charges I'm inclined to have him do the work instead of doing it myself. He knows what he's doing, and can do it more quickly and without needing a "real mechanic" standing over his shoulder, like I would. I suspect I'm looking at about a thousand bucks to get the bike right were I want it.

My first goal, as I explained to him, is less about top speed than about reducing engine strain. That is, I'd like to not be at 8,000 RPMs when going 55 miles per hour. He advised me that I'd be better off upgrading my continuous variable transmission first, rather than going the "performance air filter, performance exhaust, tune and possibly upgrade or replace the carb" route.

Guesstimate on a good variator upgrade, parts and labor, $250 (I just texted him for a real estimate).

Guesstimate on the air/exhaust replacement, just tuning the existing carb rather than up-jetting or replacing it: $400. I'm not looking for "high end" on the performance exhaust, just less restriction at both ends of the system so that I can burn more fuel in, and unlock more power from, the engine.

That's not bad.

I'm guessing another $200 for the second set of tires, which I will probably wait for until the factory tires are more worn -- but I'll be going a little wider, as the rims can handle that and I'll get better road grip and traction.

All in all, if I'm going to keep the bike for at least another two years, I don't think spending up to a thousand bucks on improving it is money poorly spent.

And as a "daily local and sub-100-mile rider," I think keeping it for a couple of years before going bigger would be the right move. While I would really, really, really like to ride a motorcycle to New Orleans or DC next year, I suppose I can wait and just travel by car/plane for such things.

Anyway, that's my thinking at the moment. I really enjoy riding this small bike. Putting a little money into it now, and waiting before putting quite a bit more money into something else, is probably the sensible middle path.

A Motorcycle I'd Like But Probably Won't Buy Just Yet

I've been considering various types/models, and watching the used market, for The Next Bike.

Don't think I'm quite ready yet, but a 2008 Kawasaki KLR just popped up on Craigslist in my area. Price -- $1,500 -- is right, and from the photos it seems to be in pretty good shape.

The KLR is a bike that makes my "top 10 prospects" list. The only thing I really don't like about it is that it's liquid-cooled, but what ya gonna do -- it's a 652cc single-cylinder engine, which I suspect just can't have enough air moved around it to cool it that way.

What I do like about it is part of what makes the "liquid-cooled" part kind of strange: The US Marine Corps uses a "military edition" of the KLR (they run theirs on diesel or kerosene instead of regular gas, though).

Why would the Marine Corps choose it? The KLR is a rugged bike that's kind of caught between the dirt, "dual sport," and "adventure" categories ... and that can do about 90 miles per hour on the road. Some riders say that it vibrates just a little too much for comfort on really long road trips, but I suspect it's reliable on such trips. Having seen first hand the rigors the armed forces put motorcycles through, I'd expect it to just not break down much and to be pretty easy to maintain. I'd feel reasonably secure  riding one of those on a long road trip.

Why wait on a KLR, other than that I'm waiting in general?

Because I expect to see a lot of them -- military surplus, which does mean diesel, but I can live with that -- on the surplus market in the fairly near future.

The Marine Corps -- specifically the 1st Reconnaissance Battalion -- is already fielding Zero MMX electric motorcycles, and I expect electric bikes to start taking over military cycle procurement in a big way.

No, not because the Pentagon is all woo-woo woke greenie weenie. Even if it is, that's not the relevant factor.

The most relevant factors are 1) noise and 2) heat signature. Electric bikes are quiet and not as visible to detection systems that look around for big infrared spots. Those are both important for recon, and helpful for other uses (e.g. messenger/courier cycling).

Another relevant factor is that if you drop a bunch of solar panels at a forward base to charge batteries, you don't have to make such drops over and over again like you do with big bladders full of diesel fuel. The force using those bikes can keep using those bikes indefinitely even if supply to their base gets sketchy.

When the military KLRs start going on the surplus market, I might buy one of those -- or take advantage of the lower prices for used civilian type KLRs that will probably result from the military surplus supply surge.

Or I might pick a different bike. I'm open to everything from 250cc (several models) to, say, 883cc (the Harley-Davidson Iron 883). I do prefer air-cooled, and will want something that rides comfortably at distance (none of those "lean all the way forward to ride" bikes), but value for price will probably be the main consideration, when I get there.

Interesting Idea For My Next Travel Computer Rig

I've used and enjoyed Raspberry Pi  computers in the past. I moved to "mini PCs" with x86  instead of ARM CPUs for use as "daily driver" work machines some time back, and now rock 16Gb of RAM instead of the (so far) maximum 8Gb available in a Pi.

    BUT!

I can make do with ARM and 8Gb. I've done it.

The new $120 (with power supply, etc. -- the machine alone is $90) Raspberry Pi 500 is a "computer in a keyboard" rig.

It runs a 2.4GHz quad-core ARM CPU on 8Gb of RAM. Storage is just a microSD card (a 32Gb card is included in the kit). It's got three USB ports, Ethernet, and two micro-HDMI ports.

Between the machine, two tiny HDMI projectors (to use hotel room walls as monitors), and cables to connect the projectors to the machine, I'm guesstimating somewhat less than $250.

Pros: More compact than carrying a laptop and external keyboard, and powerful enough to do my regular work on, albeit a little more slowly. With projectors, my "monitor" size is adjustable instead of being stuck with a small laptop screen.

Cons: No way to use it in airports or planes (but I don't do much of that anyway and am getting better about doing most of that on my phone). Also, the problem with "keyboard in a computer" is that if the keyboard goes the computer does too, absent significant improvisational rigging.

The pros and cons are both significant, so I won't be making any hasty decisions, especially with no big near-term travel planned anyway.

    Well, That Escalated Quickly

The good news: After only a couple of weeks of being a little active on Bluesky, I now have more than 400 followers.

The not really bad, but predictable news: Most of them seem to be attractive young ladies who want me to subscribe to their OnlyFans channels.

Thus far, I've resisted the OnlyFans temptation -- not just on Bluesky, but completely. I won't pretend I never consume porn, but I don't see the case for putting cash into that consumption when there's so much "free" content out there.

IMO, 70 degrees Fahrenheit is the Perfect Motorcycling Temperature

I had to go out a few nights ago when the temperature was in the low 40s, and didn't take time to really bundle up well (Tamara's car was on the fritz; turned out to be the serpentine belt shredding itself, and the cause of that was the tensioner going bad).  Miserable. I probably should have taken the extra five minutes to dress really warmly.

But today, I ran out on a quick errand just as it turned 70 degrees. No need for multiple heavy layers. I left the cool Fonzie jacket/jeans at home and just wore a windbreaker over a t-shirt (and elbow pads) up top  with light pants (and knee pads) below. All nicely coordinated in black and a goldish yellow to match the bike, of course. Made me wish I had time and reason to ride 60 miles instead of six.

If it's hotter than 80, even the minimally safety-conscious gear will be a little hot. If it's cooler than 60, even the minimally warm gear will be a little constraining. At 70, it's like the porridge Goldilocks preferred.

I Should Probably Have Kept That Domain

Back in the early 2000s (pre-2009), I purchased the domain name shadowcabinet.us, and offered it to the Libertarian National Committee as a donation if they cared to create a "shadow cabinet," which I regarded as a great idea. They weren't interested.

During my desultory run for the party's 2012 presidential nomination -- I left electoral politics for a few years entirely after a few campaign things, such as a hospitality suite at the Missouri LP's state convention -- I decided to put that domain to use and started making appointments to my own shadow cabinet.

I thought that was a good idea then, and think it's a good idea now, but I eventually let the domain go. I wasn't involved in that kind of politics, the LNC didn't have the good sense to take the donated domain and do something useful with it, and I didn't feel like continuing to pay annual registration fees.

Someone else owns it now, according to whois.

And Democrats are talking about the need for a shadow cabinet (see, for example, here), as should be the norm for all political parties but for some reason never has been in the US.

If I'd had the foresight to hold on to that domain, it might have been sellable for far more than I'd have had in it at this point.

Then again, I suppose the parties should probably host their shadow cabinets at, and as part of, their party web sites.
