It was 35 years ago today that Linus Torvalds announced on a newsgroup (remember those?) "I’m doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won’t be big and professional like GNU) for 386 (486) AT clones."
Three weeks later, the first kernel of the new OS was uploaded to an FTP server for distribution. It needed a name, so the volunteer server admin called it "Linux."
Today, Linux is the most-used operating system in the world by far. 63.1% of servers run Linux. 71.8% of mobile phones (Android runs on the Linux kernel). An unknown but large percentage of embedded systems. Basically everything except the plain vanilla desktop PC, where it's finally gaining share.
