Someone Should Tell the Florida GOP ...

... about the Streisand Effect. Per CBS News:

The Republican Party of Florida filed suit on Friday against the Florida Democratic Party, many of its candidates, and a slew of television stations, seeking to stop the airing of a political ad that highlights the leaked grand jury presentment in the Hope Florida scandal.

The scandal, for those not following it:

A grand jury found that several Florida Republican figures conspired to steal $10 million in taxpayer money, route it through a charity operated by the state's first lady, and use it to rig an election. In addition to Casey DeSantis, the conspirators included Ashley Moody (then the state's attorney general, now a US Senator) and James Uthmeier (who is the state's attorney general now, but at the time of the theft operated the PACs that the laundered money went to).

The lawsuit comes after a court "expunged" the grand jury report.

But expungement doesn't change the facts.

The facts being that a grand jury found that several Florida Republican figures conspired to steal $10 million in taxpayer money, route it through a charity operated by the state's first lady, and use it to rig an election.

Not only is the lawsuit frivolous and vexatious on its face, but it will just result in more people noticing that a grand jury found that several Florida Republican figures conspired to steal $10 million in taxpayer money, route it through a charity operated by the state's first lady, and use it to rig an election.

Green Card Holders and Voting

Per The Guardian:

The US Department of Justice has filed criminal charges against 28 green card holders in California accused of fraudulently registering to vote and casting illegal ballots. ... A justice department spokesperson said 21 of the 28 defendants had cast unlawful ballots.

If they did, I have no sympathy for them. US Citizenship and Immigration Services expressly informs green card applicants that "[p]ermanent residents cannot vote in federal, state, or local elections." Do the crime, do the time.

As for registration, given that so many states have "motor voter" laws that may automatically register people who get drivers' licenses, etc., I'd say the criterion for prosecution should be "did this person actually vote or attempt to vote?" It's entirely possible that a green card holder gets a driver's license, gets automatically registered due to government error, and never even notices, let alone tries to use the registration to actually vote.

A lot of the news coverage of such things, including the story linked above, asserts that "[v]oting by noncitizens is extremely rare," and that seems to be the case.

In fact, this set of arrests tends to confirm that. California claims 22 million registered voters. The US Department of Justice has been able to find a whopping 21 alleged non-citizen voters. That's less than 1 in a million registered voters. Have any statewide elections in California ever been decided by one one-millionth of votes cast? Or even by, say, 21 votes?

Applicable(?) Aphorisms #41

"Walk as if you are kissing the Earth with your feet." (Buddhism, Thich Nhat Hanh)

True, false, good, bad, useful, not so useful, etc.? Discuss.

My thoughts:

OK, I had to look that one up to figure out what it even means or refers to. Hanh was a Zen master and, Zen being largely connected to meditation, was discussing walking as meditation, and recommending that one walk slowly, attentive to contact with the ground, timing steps with breathing, etc.

I guess I might give that  a try, but usually when walking I'm more of the outward than inward attention type, and that attention is less toward the ground immediately beneath me than to my surroundings (which sometimes results in sprains, etc.). I guess I'm more of a "nature walker" than a "meditation walker." To each their own.

NFL Week 5 Results

Kind of a boring week -- the Chiefs didn't play at all, and the Jaguars played on the NFL Network, which I don't subscribe to. Any, correct picks in green, incorrect picks in red:

  • Dallas Cowboys beat Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  • Jacksonville Jaguars beat Philadelphia Eagles
  • Houston Texans beat Tennessee Titans
  • Cincinnati Bengals beat Miami Dolphins
  • Las Vegas Raiders beat New England Patriots
  • Minnesota Vikings beat New Orleans Saints
  • Cleveland Browns beat New York Jets
  • Pittsburgh Steelers beat Indianapolis Colts
  • New York Giants beat Washington Commanders
  • Chicago Bears beat Green Bay Packers
  • Denver Broncos beat Los Angeles Chargers
  • Detroit Lions beat Arizona Cardinals
  • San Francisco 49ers beat Seattle Seahawks*
  • Baltimore Ravens beat Atlanta Falcons
  • Los Angeles Rams beat Buffalo Bills*
Nine right, six wrong (although one of the wrongs, Giants v. Commanders, was a tie rather than a defeat for the Giants). Not too terrible. I'm currently 48 right to 30 wrong for the season and in the 89.8th percential among players in ESPN's NFL Pick'em game.

Still Chinese, But Looks More High-Quality Than the Temu "Random Letters Are Our Brand Name" Stuff

With a new, better motorcycle, I'd been planning to buy a new, better air pump. I've had two Temu products (one for each of the old bikes). One shit the bed after about six months; the other has held on, but I can't say I really trust it.

Of course, I kept forgetting that I needed to, you know, actually buy the thing until today when I was watching a FortNine video that is "sponsored" by a "PSA" (about 45 seconds in) advising me to "check my damn tire pressure":

And, of course, the "PSA" recommends a brand and offers promo codes (in the video's description text) for discounts on several models. After looking at reviews (and noticing that Ryan FNine prefers this one) I got $6 off the Fanttik X9 Ace Mini (not an affiliate link, but presumably FortNine will get a taste if you use the promo code).

Because I know the trolls will be chiming in with "why not American?" BS, I looked for an American maker of motorcycle air pumps. There's one -- and their product looks fairly large, seems to rely on manual checking of pressure with a separate tool, and has to be connected to the bike's 12-volt battery. The Ace X9 Mini is compact, runs off its own USB C charged battery, and monitors the pressure itself (you can even tell it what pressure to inflate to and walk away -- it will stop when it hits the correct pressure).

I'm planning, Real Soon Now, to consolidate all my ride tools (inflater, plug kit, wrenches, sockets, etc.) into one kit that I can just move between bikes instead of having three separate, but usually incomplete, sets, one always on each bike.

I Guess I'm Riding a Bagger Now

But only when I want to. The Viking Bags 28-Liter Pantheon Saddlebags (not an affiliate link) come with "quick mount/release" hardware, so I can have them off in about 30 seconds (there's an internal lock so no one else can remove them, at least easily).

They arrived this morning, I installed them in 15 minutes or less (as advertised!), and took them on a quick test ride. No unseemly rattling, etc. I stopped mid-ride to snap a picture.

Pretty sweet. I think I'm going to like them, and they'll definitely make long-distance, multi-day trips more practical.

Applicable(?) Aphorisms #40

"Purity of Heart is to will one thing." (Søren Kierkegaard)

True, false, good, bad, useful, not so useful, etc.? Discuss.

My thoughts:

The aphorism is also the title of the work from which it's taken; that essay is about single-mindedness and total devotion to "the good" (which to Kierkegaard meant God), as opposed to attempting to "serve two masters."

Interesting, but there are really two ways to approach it, because we all have to eat.

One of those ways is to take a vow of poverty and intentionally adopt an ascetic, devotional lifestyle even at the price of possible starvation, etc.

The other is to be born into, and for life enjoy, a certain degree of affluence that leaves one free to express and act on such devotion without worry as to where the next meal will come from.

Kierkegard was in the latter category, and while I find his writings quite interesting in general, I perceive a bit of "let them eat cake" naïveté in this particular aphorism.

If I change any of my picks, the changes will be made before kickoff and specifically noted in an update to this post.

A Viking I Shall Go

I love it when a non-plan comes together.

A client owed me some money, and in asking how I'd like to be paid it came up that they don't do Bitcoin but were good with check, cash via PayPal ... or just buying me something I wanted in that general price range.

And I just happened to have been looking at something which came to almost exactly that price (give or take $20), and really liking it, but having trouble deciding whether or not to spend that kind of money on that kind of thing. The "just buy you something" offer made up my mind for me, and they're on the way:

They're a 28-liter (14 liters each) pair of hard-case Viking Bags Pantheon Saddlebags (not an affiliate link) complete with "quick mount" hardware for Lena Mae.

They go on and come off quickly/easily, but are locked to the bike (via a lock inside) when they're on it.

Between those and my top case -- or possibly a top bag, which I've been considering since it would be easier to remove along with the saddlebags when I prefer the bike bare-naked -- I'll probably be able to carry seven days' worth of travel necessities, plus some food for the road to minimize c-store/fast food stops on long trips.

And they just happen to be American-made, so the trolls can consider themselves fed.

I Usually Find Amazon's "Prime Big Deal Days" Somewhat Disappointing These Last Few Years

This year isn't really an exception. I did buy two things -- a new motorcycle helmet and a Bluetooth headset to install in it -- and both were listed as "deals," but it was only a discount of about 10%, from ~$70 to ~$63.

It seems like a decade or so ago, there were a lot more discounts that were really deep, 30-50% off, than there are now.

I'd had that helmet and that headset in my "shopping list" for about a month, and 10% off is better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick -- especially since it doesn't include a $4 "digital products credit" I get for choosing "no rush shipping" (I'll spend it on Kindle ebooks -- haven't bought anything new to read in a little while). But I was kind of hoping that a $107 helmet I also had on my list would be on a deal for $70 or less.

The more expensive helmet is a well-regarded Italian brand that almost perfectly matches Lena Mae's "old school matte green" livery.

The helmet I bought is a black and gold Chinese helmet that has the same brand name as my tent. If the specs are accurate, it should be more appropriately sized than my current daily driver (my head circumference is right on the line between "medium" and "large," and the current helmet, a "large," is a little loose). In addition to an internal "sunglasses" visor, it has an extra external swap-in visor in glare-reducing gold.

Both the Italian and Chinese helmets are regular full-face helmets. The current helmet is "modular" so you can flip the whole front up and ride open-face, but I never use that feature. It's more trouble than it's worth, and also you're riding down the road with a big chunk of helmet sticking up and catching the headwind.

Applicable(?) Aphorisms #39

"The greatest wealth is to live content with little" (allegedly Epicurus, but more likely Lucretius)

True, false, good, bad, useful, not so useful, etc.? Discuss.

My thoughts:

The aphorism appears in "Vatican Sayings," a 14th-century Vatican manuscript, attributed to Epicurus but seemingly a partial/truncated quote from Lucretius in On The Nature of Things:

"The greatest wealth is to live content with little, for there is never want where the mind is satisfied."

The actual quote provides some context ... but perhaps the medieval Catholic Church wasn't as keen on to that context to the extent that it preached general contentment, without intellectual enrichment, to the peasantry?

Either way, it's a nod to the virtues of "the simple life," but in the fuller version it promotes "the life of the mind."

Personally, I'm happier when I possess certain material objects that exceed the absolutely, positively necessary minimum but either make life easier or are enjoyable. For example, I'd rather drive or ride than walk unless I'm walking specifically for enjoyment.

On the other hand, given the choice between a free Lamborghini on one hand or a free practical vehicle and library filled with books of my choice, I'd probably take the latter (or take the Lamborghini, sell it, and buy the practical vehicle, the books, and other things both practical and enjoyable).

But let's roll that back even more to the first few words: "The greatest wealth is to live content ..."

No. To me, contentment itself is a form of death. What's life without goals and ambitions, however minor or trivial they might be in the scheme of things?
