I, John Brown, am now quite certain that the crimes of this guilty land can never be purged away but with blood. I had as I now think, vainly flattered myself that without very much bloodshed, it might be done.
Depressing, yes, and I wish it weren't so. But at times like this a peaceful end to the US government's war on its subjects just doesn't seem very likely.
